Black Healing Circles

The Black Healing Circles (BHC) was started by Joie Lou Shakur in partnership with Our VOICE: Buncombe County’s Rape Crisis Center and the Center for Participatory Change’s Racial Equity Circle. The circles were crafted as a community healing resource for Black people at the intersection of racial violence and sexual violence.

The Black Healing Circles have completed its first full 5 part series and is in the process of developing a sustainable model to relaunch with its next 12 month long series in September 2018 through October 2019. The BHC was awarded funding for another year under the North Carolina Coalition Against Sexual Assault’s (NC CASA) Sexual Assault Services Programs providing core services and direct intervention to survivors of sexual assault.

Stay tuned for the upcoming end of year report and written resource tool being published as a harvest of the things learned through BHC’s first year in Buncombe County.
