My name is Joie Lou Shakur.

I am a culture worker, filmmaker, and farm steward.

 

Joie Lou Shakur (they/them) is a Black Trans immigrant from Jamaica. They are currently a Southern culture worker, filmmaker, and farm steward based in rural North Carolina.

Joie Lou Shakur is the Founding Director of Comfrey Films. Comfrey Films is a Film Fellowship Program and Production House focused on cultural organizing and narrative power led by and for Black Trans and Gender Non-Conforming people.

In addition to their work with Comfrey Films, Joie Lou facilitates healing spaces for Black folks seeking transformation to reconnect with the Earth, their bodies, and their deepest desires.

When they’re not building Black futures, Black Transformative possibilities, or filming on set, you can find Joie Lou in a pottery studio, practicing for karaoke, or cooking traditional Jamaican Sunday dinners on a Tuesday afternoon.
